Preparartion for Machine Quilting

Machine quilting that compliments your quilt top can be achieved if the quilt top and borders have been constructed on straight grain; if the backing is straight and of good quality and all the creases have been washed or ironed out; and both the quilt top and backing are squared.

Fullness or puckers in blocks or borders cannot necessarily be quilted out. I will do my professional best, but quilt tops with problems may still have problems after machine quilting.

Do not baste or pin your quilt together. Backing and batting should be a minimum 4” larger on all sides than the quilt top.

I will use your backing and batting or if you prefer -

Backings – I carry a limited choice of wide cotton backings and patchwork fabric that can be used for backings.

Machine quilters also have a wonderful resource in Widebacks Australia. (see links) Brenda and the Widebacks team specialise in wide backing fabrics and they stock the latest releases from all your favourite fabric manufacturers and can match virtually any quilttop. The exact quantity for your quilt can be ordered and is shipped within 24 hours.

Battings – At the moment I stock three different battings which I feel give the best results on my machine.quilt batting

Matilda’s Own Wool/poly – 60%wool/40% polyester which is prewashed, preshrunk and full machine washable. 2.4mtrs wide and $24.00/mtre.

Matilda’s Own O-sew-Soft Polyester on a scrim gives a similar drape and stability as the wool blend, but with a lower loft and lighter weight and it is pure white.
